I had spent three weeks in Haiti, following the August 14 (2021). Traffic was so packed on Airport Road, that I thanked my driver, walking the final 100 meters to my compound. It had rained heavily that morning; mud covered my shoes and hopped between puddles. Near the entrance, a group argued loudly with police. Beyond them, there was either a wrecked or stalled vehicle causing the miles-long blockage. As I entered the gate, I glanced up at the Haitian security guard, as if to ask "why is it so crazy today?" He had been casually watching the turmoil, his hand casually resting on the butt-stock of the assault rifle slung over his shoulder. Seeing my glance, he chuckled, saying "c'est compliqué" ... "Haiti" .... "c'est compliqué" - it's complicated.

It's easy for someone new to Haiti to find it perplexing. It's tempting to suggest how to fix it, without completely knowing it. Haiti is a complex place, but it's also unique and special.

The Haitian Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on 1 January 1804 marking the end of 13-year long Haitian Revolution. Haiti has endured a challenging history. And as the Haitian proverb goes, “beyond mountains, there are mountains.” This is a metaphor for: “as you solve one problem, another will present itself.”

Still, despite all odds, 200+ years since it declared independence, Haiti persists. This shirt is a celebration of that fact.
